Words from the Director Sophie Giuliani
"Phoebe" is a symbolistic exploration through the journeys of three distinct characters driven by unconformity, power, and the embodiment of femininity. Central to the narrative is the exploration of modern beauty standards and the protagonist's decision to reject them. Each of the three characters symbolizes a different aspect of femininity but ultimately stands as a representation of the one goddess. The protagonist's stake lies in her ability to break free from societal expectations and reclaim her own identity. These symbolic gestures and performative rituals serve as a metaphor for the protagonist's transformation into a goddess. A pivotal part of this transformative process involves the invocation of a demon, which is presented in four stages: The Circle, The Calling Forth, The Binding, and The Banishing. Each stage is characterized by specific actions, such as drawing circles with affirmations of the demon's name, tantric movements to draw the demon into the physical world, the use of candles placed in cages as wards to contain its power, and finally, a symbolic release of the demon.
